Keratin vs smoothening vs rebonding: which one should you choose?
All three treatments make hair smoother and easier to manage, but they work very differently. The right choice depends on how straight you want your hair, how much upkeep you accept and how healthy your hair is today.
The quick difference
- Keratin treatment: coats hair to reduce frizz and add shine. Keeps natural movement. Lasts about 3 to 5 months and washes out slowly.
- Smoothening: relaxes frizz and waves for smoother, straighter-looking hair with some volume. Lasts about 4 to 6 months.
- Rebonding: permanently breaks and resets the hair bonds for pin-straight hair. Treated hair stays straight until it grows out; new roots need touch-ups.
How to pick the right one
- Decide on the look: Want soft, frizz-free hair with movement? Choose keratin. Smoother and straighter but not flat? Choose smoothening. Poker-straight? Rebonding.
- Check your hair health: If your hair is bleached, breaking or recently coloured, start with keratin or a deep repair treatment. Strong chemical treatments can damage weak hair further.
- Think about upkeep: Keratin needs repeating every few months. Rebonding needs root touch-ups every 6 to 8 months as hair grows.
- Ask about the products used: Ask your artist what product they use and whether it is formaldehyde-free. Good ventilation during the service is important.
Do not colour your hair within 2 weeks before or after any of these treatments. Ask your artist for the right gap for your hair.
Aftercare that makes results last
- Wait 48 to 72 hours before the first wash, or as your artist advises.
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner.
- Avoid tying, clipping or tucking hair behind the ears for the first few days.
- Use a heat protectant before any styling.
- Oil the lengths lightly once a week to prevent dryness.

Frequently asked questions
Which is less damaging, keratin or smoothening?
Keratin is usually gentler because it mostly coats the hair. Smoothening and rebonding change the hair structure and carry more risk on weak hair.
Will my hair fall after smoothening?
The treatment does not affect roots, but it can cause breakage if hair is weak or aftercare is poor. Healthy hair and good aftercare reduce this risk.
Can I do keratin on curly hair?
Yes. Keratin reduces frizz and loosens curls slightly while keeping some natural texture.
How long does the treatment take?
Usually 2 to 4 hours, depending on hair length and thickness. Rebonding on long hair can take longer.
